The Ocean:
Earth’s Climate Powerhouse Part 2 of 3

Beneath the surface, the ocean operates through an intricate network of currents, upwellings, and deep-sea conveyors—collectively known as the global ocean conveyor belt. This deep oceanic system moves heat, carbon, nutrients, and oxygen around the world, profoundly influencing weather, ecosystems, and the carbon cycle.
Rising global temperatures are disrupting ocean patterns. Melting polar ice, warming surface waters, and altered salinity levels weaken the conveyor belt, which can destabilise regional climates, slowing monsoons in Asia, intensifying storms in the tropics, and triggering droughts elsewhere.
Recognising these shifts, THRIVE’s Ocean Governance cluster is exploring integrated solutions that combine scientific insight, Indigenous knowledge, and policy innovation.

South Australia Algal Bloom

South Australia is facing a major environmental crisis as a harmful algal bloom spreads across its coastline. Triggered by extreme weather events linked to climate change, the bloom is killing thousands of marine animals, causing health issues for beachgoers, and threatening local fisheries and tourism. With no known way to stop a bloom once it begins, the impacts may last for years. This is more than a local issue—it’s a wake-up call about our changing climate and fragile ecosystems. Read the News from THRIVE Volunteer Kim, a local to Adelaide, Australia, who witnessed the impact of the algal bloom first hand on a beach walk. |
